UMD ETLA One Thing Confernece

August 6, 2025

Five members of the Game On project team introduced a room of about 50 Maryland educators to several games that could be introduced to students in educational settings (e.g., camps, aftercare, classrooms). In the first round participants could choose from Qwixx, Skyjo, Elimino, Deduckto, or Next Station London. In the second round participants selected from Point Salad, Kingdomino, No Thanks, SET, and Gobblet Gobblers/Achi.

College Park Academy Summer Camp

July 21- August 1, 2025

Center for Mathematics Education (CfME) doctoral student, Victoria Fernandez, facilitated a math games session during the College Park Academy Summer Camp. Victoria worked with approximately 50-60 5th-9th graders 35 minutes each day for two weeks.

During this first few days students were able to choose from a collection of two-player strategy games like Quarto, Yamma, Abalone, and Six-o. By the end of week one larger groups games were introduced like Deduckto, Skyjo, Point Salad and No Thanks. During week two Victoria introduced Kingdomino, Patchwork, Ticket to Ride-New York, and Set. Students were able to choose games that interest them or create they own game as a final project!

UTeach Conference Presentation

May 21st, 2025

Our FMTC president, Zoe Chabria, presented a Number Hive presentation that Jade had developed at the national Uteach conference in Reno. The session was well attended with over 20 folks who were eager to hear more about the other games we had been using.

Maryland Mentor Corps Colloabortion

May 9th, 2025

Our FMTC chapter was invited to partner with the Maryland Mentor Corp for their Celebration Day at the University of Maryland. This is a day where they bring local 4th grade students who were tutored throughout the year on campus to celebrate. Several students and faculty facilitated play with three classes of 4th graders for 30 minutes. We played Gobblet Gobblers, Quarto, Family Katomino, Set, Sixxo, calendar puzzles, Uno, Connect Four, and Swish.

Maryland Day 2025

April 26th, 2025

Each year our university hosts a Maryland Day celebration where over 50,000 local community members are invited to see a showcase of all aspects of our university. This year we decided to open our classroom spaces for families who wanted to play games. We had 7 FMTC student volunteers (Jade, Arthur, Rowan, Evan, Peter, Abby and Timothy). We estimated there were over 50 visitors who stopped by and played 13 different games (Gobblet Gobblers, Quarto, No Thanks, Uno, Katamino Family, Set, Mancala, Seven Wonders, Swish, Hive, Ticket to Ride-New York, Lost Cities and Magnatiles).

Early Career Teaching Conference (ECTC)

February 1, 2025

Each year the Associate of Maryland Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMMTE) hosts an Early Career Teaching Conference (ECTC). The goal of this conference is to provide novice teachers (pre-service up to five years) an opportunity to present at a conference of their peers. This conference typically draws around 50 participants. Our student affiliate, FMTC, hosted the conference at the University of Maryland this year and had over 50 people register for the conference with 11 current FMTC members attending and several FMTC alumni. At this conference we had 4 FMTC students present on ideas from the Game On project. Two students  hosted a session about Number Hive, while two more students used the game of Set. In total these sessions drew about 20 novice teacher attendees.

Northeast Noyce Networking Conference

November 8th, 2024

The FMTC faculty advisor, Dana Grosser-Clarkson, and two Noyce Scholars/FMTC members, Cassidy Kennington & Laura Krell,  were invited to attend the Northeast Noyce Networking conference in Boston in Fall 2024. We hosted a table at the STEM share-a-thon event and provided information about the Game On project and allowed participants to play. Several in-service teachers stopped by our table and engaged with various games. The project was well received with several attendees staying over 20 minutes to engage with the games.

Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference

October 18, 2024

FMTC members who had been working with the Game On project presented sessions on how games can be used in the classroom at the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) Annual Conference. One former and one current FMTC student (Stephanie Greer & Jade Miles) introduced Number Hive, two current FMTC members (Jade Miles & Abby O’brien) presented on Deduckto and our faculty advisor and one student (Dana Grosser-Clarkson & Zoe Chabria) presented on Qwixx. The three presentations were very well attended with each session having anywhere from 15-25 teachers in the audience. At least 1 teacher reached out to us afterward about implementing some of the games in their local classroom.

FMTC Game On Workshop

October 9th, 2024

We invited students, faculty, and local teachers to a free workshop that the FMTC hosted at the University of Maryland. Three current FMTC students (Jade Miles, Zoe Chabria & Abby O’Brien), one former FMTC student (Stephanie Greer) and our FMTC faculty advisor (Dana Grosser-Clarkson) introduced participants to three games–Qwixx, Deduckto, and Number Hive– and described how they could be incorporated into their mathematics classroom. The evening was filled with lots of laughter and joy. We had 3 UMD faculty members, 4 UMD students, 3 Prince George’s County Public School teachers, and 1 Montgomery County Public School teacher in the audience. Given the feedback on the post workshop survey (n=5), Number Hive was the crowd favorite, with all 5 responders wanting to play again and take the game into their classrooms, and some did!
